What's New in Lincoln Park - Top 5 New Developments

1) Grocery Shop with Focus on Local Food Sourcing Opens in Old Town

A growing interest in local and regionally-grown foods is on the rise, and is inspiring retailers to give special attention to this rising consumer shopping practice. Dom’s Kitchen and Market, a smaller, specialty grocery store by the same family behind Mariano’s, recently opened its second location in Old Town. Dom’s Kitchen and Market (1233 N Wells St) provides a curated grocery experience with a selection of organic and seasonal products that are sourced locally, as much as possible, and products like handmade pasta made in Chicago. Its stores include a Wine Library, a charcuterie counter, a coffee bar, as well as other kitchen stations that serve burgers, pizza, sandwiches, sushi and more. Dom’s Kitchen and Market in Old Town follows the Lincoln Park store (2730 N Halsted St), which opened in June 2021.

2) The Porter Luxury Apartments Rising Across From DePaul Campus

The same developer behind Chicago’s newest community area project, Lincoln Yards, is also in the throes of getting approval to build an apartment tower made with timber wood. The project is an impressive feat, considering that Chicago buildings largely moved from wood materials to brick and stone following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

The company announced its plans for the site at 2100 N Southport Ave in late summer 2022 and says that with the latest technology in building materials, mass-timber wood structures are both safe and environmentally friendly. Following approval from City Council, Sterling Bay and its partner on the project, Harsthorne Plunkard Architecture, intend to begin construction on the nine-story, multi-family building in 2023. This proposed project could add 130 residential units to the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Another residential development near DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus is coming together, and once completed will offer the neighborhood 36 luxury apartments for rent. A mixed-use building project at 2411 N Lincoln Ave is called The Porter, after the privately-owned park that occupied the site. Contemporary Concepts and Studio Dwell are behind the five-story project which is also expected to be completed in 2023.

Five Iron Golf, which started in New York City, opened its third Chicago location in Lincoln Park at 1000 W North Ave, a200. Its latest site offers 11 TrackMan golf simulators, a radar technology which tracks ball speed, attack angle, club path and other data to help give participants a sense of how they’re performing and where they can improve. The idea behind Five Iron Golf, according to its team, was to give avid golfers and those interested in the sport a place to practice, play and mingle. The 13,150-square-feet space in Lincoln Park includes a bar and full-service restaurant, designed to make Five Iron Golf a place for casual hangouts as much as for training and lessons. The site can also be rented for events.

Mars Wrigley, the Chicago-based confectionery manufacturer, received approval to build a 45,000-square-foot facility at its Goose Island campus, expanding its footprint to more than 220,000 square feet. This new facility will be devoted to research and development and is estimated to cost approximately $40 million to construct.

The site will be located at 1132 W Blackhawk St, and the plans call for additional parking spaces for the campus. The goal is to complete construction by early summer 2023.

5) From Vegan to Barbecue, Lincoln Park’s Top Restaurant Openings

Briny Swine Chicago Lincoln Park

Not many breakfast spots offer an oatmeal bar with multiple toppings, but The Hen (2423 N Clark St), Lincoln Park’s newest breakfast restaurant, has that and more. Located a short distance from Lincoln Park Zoo, The Hen also serves bottomless brunch on the weekends.

Another neighborhood newcomer is Elephant + Vine (2315 N Lincoln Ave), likely to be a favorite for vegans and those who are drawn to a plant-based diet. Its menu features vegan burgers, wraps and cauliflower wings as well as decadent shakes. One of Chicago‘s largest restaurant groups, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, is bringing two of its star concepts to Lincoln Park. After closing its casual seafood concept, Oyster Bah, the restaurant group intends to turn the space into a fourth Ramen- San (1962 N Halsted Street). The restaurant is expected to open in early 2023, and later in the year, just a few doors down, the group’s popular Sushi-San will have a location at 1948 N Halsted.

Also, coming soon, a husband-and-wife team from South Carolina are working on opening their second restaurant, and first in Chicago, that will bring some lowcountry cooking, specifically whole-hog barbecue, to this north side Chicago neighborhood. Their restaurant, Briny Swine (2577 N. Clark Street), will be much larger than their east coast restaurant and will also have a raw oyster bar, which will be supplied by the same purveyor that supplies their Edisto Beach, South Carolina restaurant. Briny Swine is slated to open early 2023.
